U.S. Congressman’s Office Uses ABBYY FineReader to Solve All of It’s Scanning problems

Client: Office of Congressman John Barrow

“Simply put, we use ABBYY FineReader for one reason: it saves us time and allows us to get more things done. When I scan a document into the program, I know that the OCR recognition will be correct and I don’t have to waste time going over every sentence for errors; then, I can save it in whatever format I need at the moment and move on.”

Matt Wetherington,
Office of Congressman John Barrow,

U.S. House of Representatives

Matt Wetherington works to provide the office of Congressman John Barrow with the best solutions possible to deal with unique and time-sensitive technology problems. When choosing a scanner software package, he had a lot of goals to reach. “We work in an environment that has a tremendous amount of tasks to accomplish in an increasingly smaller amount of time”, Wetherington said. “First, we needed an interface that was simple enough to use, that we could show someone the program and know that hey could use it after a few minutes. Second, we needed a program that would allow us to perform advanced functions when special cases arose, such as re-capturing PDF documents, scanning directly into Office, or working with irregular documents that contain odd text blocks or photos. Finally, the program had to be fast.”

When testing various OCR solutions, Wetherington found out that ABBYY FineReader met all of these criteria. He especially appreciated the following FineReader features: “The interface contains large buttons that perform common tasks, but within a few clicks, also turns into an advanced user workspace. It has a very intuitive recognition interface that allows us to modify the OCR recognition to select text or photo when the software makes a mistake (such as photos with text) — this feature was missing from most of the other software that we reviewed. Furthermore, when reviewing the recognized text, the program follows along during editing, providing you with an image of the actual scan as you edit the text.

“As far as the speed of the program”, Wetherington said, “we have virtually replaced all of our other scanner software, including most scanners proprietary input programs, with ABBYY FineReader. The program actually accomplishes these tasks faster than the program designed for the scanners. Plus, the ability to put off recognition of text until I have finished scanning in all of my documents is a greatly appreciated feature. By combining an easy-to-use interface with advanced features, ABBYY FineReader has met all of our scanning problems.”
