The Lygia Clark Association Project Uses ABBYY Software to Digitize Texts and Works of Art
The "O Mundo de Lygia Clark" Cultural Association was created in May 2001 in Rio de Janeiro, to organize a repository of works and firsthand materials relating to the artist's trajectory. The Association's goal is to disseminate texts and other types of materials derived from her work through events and publications, pertaining both to her works and to the artist herself, as well as to research and certify the authenticity of the artist's works.
A new project, Lygia Clark Online Project, will be launched in 2009 and will include a portal about the artist, where Internet users, free of charge and in a democratic manner, will be able to find many types of information about her life and work. The portal's content will be updated continuously as new articles, images or information are added to the Association’s database.
The site will include: transcripts of the artist’s handwritten work, some unedited; a collection of images, where the Internet user will be able to navigate through Lygia’s sculptures, paintings and personal images; a virtual exhibition (with the main works from each of the artist's phases, organized in chronological order); and a video collection. The database currently contains 12,000 pages of Lygia's writing in addition to texts in several languages relating to the artist, 4,000 images and 12 videos.
The Association currently faces the enormous task of digitizing all of the catalogs of art that it has gathered in order to assemble a digital collection for research. Through the use of ABBYY FineReader 9.0 Professional Edition software, there was an 80% reduction in digitization time, resulting in about a 60% reduction of total production time. The Document Review process also became faster.
Working with the text involves the following steps:
the original document is digitized with Umax Astra 600S scanner, produced image is then recognized by ABBYY FineReader and converted to .DOC (Microsoft Word) which is submitted for review, PDF file with the original image is created, an entry record is created into SQL database and a file is published for research.
