Consecutive interpreting is the most popular and commonly requested kind of interpreting. A consecutive interpreter waits until the end of the speaker's sentence before rendering the entire message in the target language. It is used most frequently in:

Simultaneous interpreting is one of the most difficult types of interpreting. Using special equipment (sound-proof booths, speech transmission systems, earphones for listeners) the interpreter interprets while the speaker continuously speaks. As a rule, simultaneous interpreting is used at conferences, seminars and congresses. The main advantage of this interpreting is the time saving because, unlike consecutive interpreting, speaker does not make pauses for the interpreter and speaks with usual speed. Moreover, a speaker can hold the attention of the audience, feel the mood and reaction of participants and react accordingly. That's why simultaneous interpreting helps to avoid such situations as when those listeners who know the source language react faster than those who don't.
A simultaneous interpreter needs to familiarize him- or herself with materials relating to the event in advance. Compared with consecutive interpreting, when a consecutive interpreter has time to think over the phrase or may ask to repeat something misheard, the simultaneous interpreter has no such opportunities, which is why provision of documents for preparation is obligatory to avoid misunderstanding and omissions.
Simultaneous interpreting requires interpreters working in teams of at least 2 interpreters at the same time, replacing each other every 20-30 minutes. No simultaneous interpreter can interpret throughout the duration of an event on their own.
