Initially, Lingvo includes no dictionaries to save space on your mobile device and reduce the download and installation time. When you first launch ABBYY Lingvo Dictionaries for Android, it asks you to download at least one basic dictionary or purchase a premium dictionary from the list of available dictionaries.
Dictionaries can be easily purchased or downloaded right from within the application. To see the list of dictionaries you are interested in, adjust a filter in the "Downloads" section and choose from more than 250 dictionaries (including the basic ones), available for certain language pairs.
You can easily remove every dictionary or sound file you no longer use. To restore the removed items, simply download them once again at no extra charge.
ABBYY Lingvo Dictionaries for Android creates a list of entries from the installed dictionaries. When you start to type a word in the search field, the list automatically scrolls to the nearest match. You can find the word you need just by typing its initial letters.
By tapping the History button, you can review the previously looked-up words to avoid retyping the same word. The History dialog lists up to 100 previously viewed entries.
You can enter words in any grammar form (e.g., typing "go" or "went" will bring the relevant entry). Lingvo will either show the matching entry or turn the query into the basic "dictionary" form and display the corresponding entry.
If you type in a word for which no matches can be found, ABBYY Lingvo for Android will show a list of near-matches.
Once a word is found in multiple dictionaries, Lingvo shows all the relevant dictionary entries in one window.
A dictionary entry typically contains (some word entries may not include all the entry types):
You can choose between the full and brief entry view:
For your convenience, all words in a dictionary entry are connected by hyperlinks with their respective articles. Having found an unfamiliar word in the article, you can tap on it to get the most frequently used translation in a pop-up window. By tapping on a brief entry you will “unroll” it into a full dictionary entry with detailed information about the word.
Push "Menu" button, then tap "Inflected Forms" to view tables with inflected forms of a word.
Lingvo settings can be easily managed and adjusted to your taste. You can select a font type and size for the list of entries, and a body text of the dictionary articles as well.
