Question: Are there any functionality restrictions if the application is run under Windows Vista?
Answer: ABBYY Lingvo 12 has some restrictions when run on Windows Vista systems. These restrictions don’t hinder the main functionality of the program:
- The pop-up translation upon pointing to a word or pressing Ctrl+C+C doesn’t work in applications that have administrator’s functions (like regedit). Pop-up translations don’t appear in the Control Panel and in Notepad, WordPad and Adobe Photoshop applications.
- We have tested the pop-up function in various software and guarantee the function will work in the following applications: MS Office (Word, Excel, Outlook, Microsoft Tools 2003), Internet Explorer, Opera.
- You may encounter some graphical glitches. For example, buttons may not move correctly when you minimize the window, pin entry window button isn't drawn when the Windows Aero interface is turned on. Default color scheme may also be displayed incorrectly.
Question: Is ABBYY Lingvo 12 compatible with Microsoft Office 2007?
Answer: Currently ABBYY Lingvo 12 can’t be integrated in Microsoft Office 2007 applications. You will not be able to make the ABBYY Lingvo button appear in a Microsoft Office 2007 application.
However, the pop-up translation upon pointing to a word or pressing hot keys works correctly.
Question: Why does the message “An error occurred while installing Microsoft.MSXML2” appear at the end of the installation process, and the installation is rolled back?
Answer: To disable installation of msxml components, use the following command when installing ABBYY Lingvo 12:
"E:\setup.exe" /v"XML40_CMD=No XML30_CMD=No"
(E:\ stands for CD-ROM.)
In case the program installs successfully, you may need to download MSXML 3.0 and MSXML 4.0 components from the Microsoft website (www.microsoft.com). You will be notified about it when you attempt to start Lingvo Tutor. If Lingvo Tutor starts and functions correctly, you don’t need to install MSXML 3.0 and MSXML 4.0.
Question: Why does the message “Could not open key:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Classes\Msxml2.DOMDocument\Curver” appear during the installation process, and the installation is rolled back?
Answer: In this message reference is made to a section in the system register that is used during installation of MSXML components.
Install the program as described above.
Question: The program has installed but why does the message “Access to C:\ProgramData\ABBYY\Lingvo\12.0\Licenses\Licensing.bin was denied” appear?
Answer: This message may appear if the user doesn’t have full control rights for the contents of the Licenses folder including Licensing.bin.
You need to check the user’s rights for the following folder and its contents including Licensing.bin: C:\ProgramData\ABBYY\Lingvo\12.0\Licenses (C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Application Data\ABBYY\Lingvo\12.0\Licenses). You can view the rights by right-clicking a file or a folder and selecting Properties > Security on the drop-down menu. You need to set full control rights for all contents of the Licenses folder.
Question: Why does the message “Could not open key: HKEY_CURRENT_USER\...” appear when I start the program?
Answer: This message has to do with software protection. The user profile you are using doesn’t have the necessary rights to write data into the personal folder of the system register.
Try setting rights to writing data into the whole directory: HKEY_CURRENT_USER\. Make sure the rights apply to all subfolders.
Also, make sure there is the SYSTEM user in the HKEY_CURRENT_USER directory and that it has Full control rights for this directory and its subfolders.
Question: Why is activation necessary?

Answer: The Activation Wizard shall start automatically prompting you to activate the program. If it doesn't happen, select Help–>Activate Dictionaries… and follow the Activation Wizard's instructions.
Question: How are registration and activation different?
Answer: The registration lets the users receive free technical support, information on new versions, updates and other products. In case a registered user loses the serial number, it can be retrieved using registration data.
Activation is necessary to make the program fully functional.
Question: How can I activate the program with a different serial number?
Answer: To activate the program with a new serial number, do the following:
1. Open the Licenses folder (located in C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Application Data\ABBYY\Lingvo\12.0\, if you have Windows XP, and in C:\ProgramData\ABBYY\Lingvo\12.0, if you have Windows Vista);
2. Delete <SN>.ABBYY.License;
3. Restart ABBYY Lingvo 12;
4. Activate the program using the correct serial number.
Question: Why doesn’t the pop-up translation function work?
Answer: To use the pop-up translation function, make sure ABBYY Lingvo 12 is running at the moment you want to use the function. Go to Tools->Options->Translation->Look-up from other applications, and make sure the option "Show pop-up translation" is selected.
The pop-up translation function works in Microsoft Office applications and in Internet Explorer. If you experience problems, try restarting ABBYY Lingvo 12. Select "Translate", then click "Exit". Pop-up translation doesn’t work in PDF files, so use hotkey translation instead.
Question: Why doesn’t the hotkey translation function work?
Answer: To use the hotkey translation function, select the corresponding option in Tools->Options->Translation->Open a full entry.
There is a known glitch when the hotkey translation doesn’t work in Internet Explorer 7 running in protected mode under Windows Vista. If you encounter this glitch, do the following:
1) In the control panel (Start>Settings>Control panel) go to "User accounts" and select "Turn User Account Control on or off", then, in the dialogue box, click "Next" and clear "Use User Account control (UAC) to help protect your computer".
2) Restart the computer.
Question: Why is there no sound?
Answer: ABBYY Lingvo 12 has 15 000 voiced English words in the LingvoUniversal (En-Ru) dictionary, 10 000 voiced German words in the Universal (De-Ru) dictionary, 5 000 voiced French words in the Universal (Fr-Ru) dictionary.
Here are the possible situations and their solutions:
1) Type "welcome" and use the English-Russian dictionary to translate it. This word is voiced and has a yellow loudspeaker sign next to it. If you click the loudspeaker sign and the message appears telling you the audio file can’t be found, you need to install pronunciation files from the disk.
2) If no message appears but there is no sound either, you need to check the system sound settings. To do it, go to:
Start>Control Panel>Sounds and Audio Devices, select the "Sounds" tab and then select "Windows Default" in the Sound Scheme field.
In the "Windows event" field select any sound file (with a loudspeaker sign on the left) and click on "Play".
If there is no sound, there may be a problem in the sound settings of your operating system
3) If system sounds are working, and ABBYY Lingvo sounds are not, please contact the customer support service at support@abbyy.com.
Question: Why aren’t my settings saved?
Answer: After you have made changes in the settings (main window view, cards view, fonts, etc.) you need to exit the program correctly (select "Translate->Exit"). In this case the changes will take effect the next time you start the program.
Question: How can I add a user dictionary?
Answer: To add a user dictionary, do one of the following:
1) On the "Tools" menu select "Add dictionary…"
In the "Add dictionaries" window that appeared select a dictionary or dictionaries you want to add.
2) On the "Tools" menu select "Languages and dictionaries". In the window that appeared click "Add".
In the "Add dictionaries" window that appeared select a dictionary or dictionaries you want to add.
3) Drag & drop the desired dictionary or dictionaries from the source folder to the ABBYY Lingvo bookshelf.
Question: How do I attach an icon to the user dictionary?
Answer: In ABBYY Lingvo 12 you can create icons for .dsl user dictionaries.
If you want your dictionary to have its own icon on the bookshelf, you need to create a 14х21 BMP image. The file name of the image must be the same as of the dictionary. Before starting the compilation process make sure the image is in the same folder as the dictionary.
Question: Why are the changes in user dictionaries not saved?
Answer: For the changes in user dictionaries to be saved, you need to exit the program correctly (select "Translate->Exit") before restarting or shutting down your computer.
Question: Why does indexing of all user dictionaries start when I use word-by-word translation?
Answer: In ABBYY Lingvo 12, when you add a new word to a user dictionary (*.lud) or edit an existing word card, clicking "Find" will start indexing all added user dictionaries.
We recommend indexing your dictionaries after making changes. To do it, select "Tools->Languages and dictionaries".
Question: What are Сoncurrent and Per seat licenses?
Answer: There are two types of licenses: Concurrent and Per seat.
Сoncurrent: The number of licenses is equal to the number of program copies running on different computers. Each time ABBYY Lingvo is launched the workstation accesses the server. If there is an activated Concurrent license available, the program occupies it. When ABBYY Lingvo is closed, the license becomes available again. If no licenses are available at the moment you are running Lingvo, the program will display the corresponding message.
Per seat: The number of licenses is equal to the number of program copies installed in the network. Each license is reserved for one workstation, and ABBYY Lingvo works independently from the server. If there is an activated Per seat license on the server, it is assigned to the workstation ABBYY Lingvo is installed to. You can return the license to the server only by uninstalling ABBYY Lingvo from the workstation.
Question: Why doesn’t the license become available on the server after I close the program by clicking the X button in the main window?
Answer: In ABBYY Lingvo 12 the process of making a license available was changed.
If in the Tools->Options window the "Place ABBYY Lingvo icon in system tray" is selected, clicking on X will close the main window of the program, but will not exit the program. Thus, the license will continue to be in use. To make the license available, right-click the ABBYY Lingvo icon in the system tray and select "Exit". If you want the program to close on clicking the Х button, clear the checkbox "Place ABBYY Lingvo icon in system tray".
If you want the Concurrent license to become available as in ABBYY Lingvo 11, do the following:
1) Download and install the update.
2) In the register section HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\ABBYY\Lingvo\12.0\Launcher change the value of the HideLingvoOnSysClose parameter from "true" (Lingvo remains loaded into RAM when you click the X button) to "false" (Lingvo will close when you click the X button).
Question: What are the necessary settings for the stable functioning of the program?
Answer: The program client and the license manager installed on the server communicate via the RPC using the Named Pipes protocol. In order for the protocol to function, it must be available, and all users installing or running ABBYY Lingvo 12 must be logged on to the server.
You can check the possibility of this kind of connection between the client and the server. To do it, create a shared folder on the server with the license manager and make sure it is accessible from the client workstation.
Question: How can I make my Per Seat license available?
Answer: To make your Per Seat license available you need to uninstall the program from the workstation while staying online.
If, for some reason, you can’t make your Per Seat license available (if your computer malfunctions, the operating system has been reinstalled and Lingvo has not been uninstalled prior to that), you need to contact our Technical Support Service and send the following:
The <SN>.ABBYY.License file from the server folder...\ABBYY Lingvo 12 License Manager\License Server (or from the folder C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Application Data\ABBYY\Lingvo\12.0\Licenses).
After that we will be able to make an <SN>.license.uninstall file and send it to you. You will then be able to use this file to make your no longer used Per Seat license available.
Question: How can I relocate the program to a new server?
Answer: In order to relocate ABBYY Lingvo 12 from one server to the other, do the following:
1) Uninstall the program from the server you are not going to use.
2) Install the program to the new server (run setup.exe from the AdminSetup folder on the installation disc).
3) Start License Manager (Start>Programs>ABBYY Lingvo 12 Administrative Tools>License Manager) and type and activate the available serial numbers.
4) For concurrent licenses:
On workstations with the program working on concurrent licenses you need to reinstall the program only on one of the computers. On the rest you need to rewrite the file Concurrent.ABBYY.License from the folder C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Application Data\ABBYY\Lingvo\12.0\Licenses with the new one. The new file has the same name and is located in the folder, also of the same name, on the computer with the program installed from the new server.
For perseat licenses:
In case of per seat licenses, workstations are working independently from the server after product installation. Thus, it is not necessary to reinstall the program on workstations. You only need to mark the used licenses as “reserved for” in the new License Manager. Mind that these licenses are actually already used. All other licenses can be used for new program installations.
Question: Can I install ABBYY Lingvo 12 on a terminal server?
Answer: Only versions with Concurrent licenses support terminal server mode. The necessary number of licenses is determined by the number of users running the program at the same time.
1) Create an administrative workstation.
To do it, choose a computer from the network that meets the system requirements and is not a terminal station but is constantly accessed by the terminal server.
For more information see System administrator’s manual.
2) Start ABBYY Lingvo 12 License Manager.
3) Add and activate all available licenses.
4) Install ABBYY Lingvo 12 from the folder on the administrative workstation to the terminal server. ABBYY Lingvo 12 will be installed on the terminal server as if it were a workstation.
After this procedure it will be possible to run the program on several terminals at a time.
Question: Can I update ABBYY Lingvo 12 to Service Pack 1 on workstations in automatic mode?
Answer: Automatic update to Service Pack 1 is not supported in ABBYY Lingvo 12. To install the update, run L12537(1).exe (or L12537(2).exe) on each of the workstations.
Question: System requirements.

Question: When installing on a PDA, how can I choose to install part of the components to RAM or to the storage card?
Answer: To install part of the components to RAM or to the storage card, left-click the down arrow button on the installation pane and select where you want to install the components.
To ensure optimal performance we recommend installing the program shell (system components) to RAM, and dictionaries, user dictionaries and sound files – to the storage card.
Question: There is no Cyrillic keyboard. How can I type Russian words?
Answer: There is no separate Cyrillic on-screen keyboard in ABBYY Lingvo 12. If your mobile device doesn’t support Cyrillic symbol entry, you should ensure the possibility of typing and recognition of Cyrillic symbols yourself.
Question: Which *.sis file do I need to install ABBYY Lingvo 12 on a Symbian OS smartphone?
Answer: You should choose from the following files depending on the version of Symbian OS installed on your smartphone:

- For Symbian OS UIQ 3.0 – lingvo_uiq_3_0.sis (sent on request to all registered users of licensed ABBYY Lingvo 12 copies).
Question: Why does the message "No dictionaries available" appear when I start the program on my smartphone?
Answer: For the program to recognize your dictionaries you need to put them into the "Dic" subfolder of the "ABBYY Lingvo" folder on the storage card.
The easiest way to install dictionaries is as follows:
1. On your PC, create an "ABBYY Lingvo" folder. В этой папке создайте подпапку "Dic".
2. Copy the *.lsd files of the desired dictionaries to this folder. For example, for the universal dictionaries use LingvoUniversalEnRu.lsd (English-Russian) and UniversalRuEn.lsd (Russian-English). Dictionary files are on the installation disk in the folder \ABBYY Lingvo 12\Dic and in the "Dic" subfolder of the ABBYY Lingvo installation folder on the PC.
3. Copy the "ABBYY Lingvo" folder to the storage card.
4. Dictionaries should be added automatically when the program is started.
If you smartphone doesn’t have a storage card slot, copy the "ABBYY Lingvo" folder to the internal memory of the device. To do it:
1. Connect your smartphone to your PC and select the "Data transfer" mode on the smartphone.
Then, when you open "My computer" on the PC, you will notice your smartphone is displayed as a removable storage device. You will be able to create new folders in the internal memory of your smartphone.
2. Copy the "ABBYY Lingvo" folder to the inner memory of the smartphone.

Answer: To add a word to Lingvo Tutor, click on the button with the Tutor sign ("Add to ABBYY Lingvo Tutor") in the word card of ABBYY Lingvo. In this case the word and its translation, transcription, examples and voice pronunciation (if present) are added to the Tutor dictionary.
Question: How can I stop Lingvo Tutor from starting automatically?
Answer: To disable automatic lesson start, clear the "Enable scheduling" option in Tools->Options->Shedule in Lingvo Tutor.
Question: Can I synchronize Tutor dictionaries on my PC and PDA?
Answer: After editing a Tutor dictionary on your PC you need to copy the updated dictionary file to the Program Files\ABBYY Lingvo\TutorDic folder on the storage card or RAM. Or if you edited a Tutor dictionary on your PDA, copy the updated dictionary file to your PC. The name of the folder is the same. You can find the paths to user dictionaries by clicking Tools->Dictionaries.
The program doesn’t have any other means of dictionary synchronization.
Question: Why aren’t new word cards/statistics saved in Tutor dictionaries?
Answer: To save the changes you’ve made to a Tutor dictionary you must close the program correctly (Actions->Exit (PC) or Dictionaries->Exit (PDA)) before shutting down or resetting your PC or PDA.
