FAQ for BCR Android

What is the purpose of this application?

ABBYY Business Card Reader allows you to quickly and easily read data from business cards and save it to the contacts of your phone or to the embedded cardholder.

How do I choose the languages?

ABBYY BCR understands 22 recognition languages. You can make recognition better and faster by selecting the business card languages in the Settings or directly from Shooting dialogue  – no more than three simultaneously.

How to improve the quality of the card photo?

Provide good lighting for the card, hold your cell phone steadily and don’t move it until the photo is taken. If there is a flare on the card photo, switch off the flashlight in photo settings.

Why are some letters highlighted in red?

The letters are highlighted if they are likely to be recognized incorrectly. You can check the business card and correct the mistakes.

How can I change the field type?

Press and hold the field title to the right of the data to change the field type. Type changing is only possible for phone numbers and e-mail addresses.

How can I add or delete data?

Press the Add … button in the end of the data list to add a field. To clear a field, press the button with a cross to the right of the field. To delete a field, press and hold the button with a cross mentioned above.

How do I save a business card photo?

You can turn on saving of business card photos in the program settings. If saving is on, the card photo will be added automatically to the field of the contact’s photo. The contact’s photo can be replaced with a new photo or an image from a file when you edit it.

How to select where to save the contact?

In the settings, you can set either the application, or both the phone address book and the application to be your default saving location, or prompt to specify an individual saving location for each card.

How can I save contact from the app to the phone address book?

In order to save contact to the phone address book, you should open it in the app cardholder, tap device Menu button, select Save to contacts.

How can I select an account to save contacts?

ABBYY Business Card Reader makes it possible to save contacts in the address book, either without synchronization or with a reference to a Google account - with a possibility to synchronize contacts with Google accounts. The account selecting menu appears when saving the data into the address book. An account to be used by default can be indicated in the application settings.

How can I combine business cards into groups?

You can add a business card to a group immediately after photographing it, when editing the contact information. After saving a business card, you can always move it to another group. You can create a new group when adding a business card to a group, when moving one to another group, or from group selection mode.

What if I already have a contact with the same name?

The Android address book automatically determines contacts with identical names and displays them as one and the same record. If necessary, such contacts can be separated by pressing the Menu button in the contact entry and selecting the Link/Disconnect item.

How can I find the card I need in the Cardholder?

Business Card Reader gives you the ability to search contacts by contact's first or last name, company or city, and sort images by contact's first or last name, company or by the date the card was added. You can display business cards which belong to a certain group or all of them together, by selecting All groups in menu Groups in the upper left corner.

How can I make a call or compose an email from application?

To use the data from appclication (e.g., to make a call, compose an email or text message, find an address on the map or navigate to a specified website), open the card and simply tap the phone number or address under the business card image.

How do I search in social networks?

To find the card’s owner in social networks, open the application and select the business card. Click on the button with the logos of LinkedIn, Facebook or Twitter in the rightmost tab under the card image.

How do I synchronize my business cards?

The app allows you to synchronize your business cards stored on your Android and iOS. Synchronization is carried out via the ABBYY cloud service. To enable synchronization, select  Synchronization and register using a valid e-mail address. If you have already registered with the service using another device, simply log in to your existing account — select Synchronization - Log in and enter the e-mail address and password that you use on another device.

Additional synchronization options

Once you log in, two new items will be added to the synchronization menu:
1. The Enable menu disables or enables synchronization on the current device. If you disable synchronization on a device, any business cards that you process on that device will not be available on your other Android and iOS devices.
2. The By cell phone menu enables or disables synchronization via your cell-phone network. If this option is disabled, business cards will only be synchronized over Wi-Fi. If this option is enabled, business cards will be synchronized both over Wi-Fi and over your cell-phone network, which may entail additional data transfer costs.

Why do I need a backup copy?

The backup copy allows you to store the contents of application on your computer and then fully restore it to your phone. This may be useful if you change phones or if your phone is lost or broken.

How can I create a backup copy of my application?

To create a backup copy of your app, follow these steps:
1. In Application Options, select Backup contacts. Tap OK.
2. Connect your iPhone to a computer in the Disk Drive mode.
3. Open the folder \abbyy\bcr\Backup on your phone in the file Explorer.
4. Copy the file backup.sqlite to your computer by dragging it with the mouse to the desktop or any folder of your choice.

How can I restore my data from an archive?

To restore your cards from a backup copy, follow these steps:
1. Make sure that you have an ABBYY Business Card Reader backup file.
2. Connect your phone to a computer in the Disk Drive mode.
3. Open the folder \abbyy\bcr\Backup on your phone in the file Explorer.
4. Drag backup.sqlite with the mouse to this folder. If a message that an object with the same name already exists appears, select Replace.
5. In Application Options, select Restore Contacts. Tap OK.
Attention! During restoration, all data in the application will be deleted and replaced with the data from the backup copy.
