ABBYY Lingvo Dictionaries for Android is an electronic dictionary for mobile devices on Android OS, which helps obtain a quick and precise translation of a word or expression. You can enter the word to be translated both manually and using the built-in camera of your mobile device.

What devices does this application support?

This application supports smartphones based on Android 4.0.3 OS and higher and Google Play application 3.9.16 and higher.

What interface languages does this application support?

The application supports interfaces in the Russian and English languages.

What dictionaries are available in this program?

Over 250 dictionaries are available in the program, part of them are included in the price and available for download. The list includes both general lexical and subject-based dictionaries for different language directions and is constantly expanded. The convenient interface of ABBYY Lingvo Dictionaries allows the user to choose and install the dictionaries they need straight from the program.

How do I install a dictionary?

To install a dictionary:

  • Select DOWNLOAD button in the menu,
  • Select translation direction using language filter,
  • Select dictionary from the dictionaries list in chosen translation direction
  • Press the DOWNLOAD/BUY button in the " About Dictionary" dialogue.

How do I restore a previously purchased dictionary?

  • Select DOWNLOAD button in the menu
  • Select RESTORE PURCHASES
  • If the dictionary has not been downloaded, select it and press DOWNLOAD in the list of dictionaries for buying.

Where can I find discounts?

  • Select DOWNLOAD button in the menu
  • Press this /media/4459/discount_v3.png button

How do I delete a dictionary?

To delete a dictionary:

  • Select DICTIONARIES button in the menu
  • Select translation direction using language filter
  • Choose dictionary for deletion
  • Select DELETE button in the menu

How do I listen to the word pronunciation?

To listen to how a word is pronounced by native speakers, press this grey button /media/4464/sound_grey_v3.png located next to the word transcription.

NOTE. If the sound file for a given dictionary has not been downloaded, the sound strikethrough symbol will be grey /media/4465/sound_grey_v3_crossed.png. You will be offered to download the sound file when pressing the grey symbol.

How do I delete the sound file for a dictionary?

To delete the sound file for a dictionary:

  • Select DICTIONARIES button in the menu
  • Select translation direction using language filter
  • Choose dictionary for sound deletion
  • Press the REMOVE SOUND button in the "About Dictionary" dialogue.

How do I translate a word or a phrase?

To translate a word or a phrase:

  • Go to the SEARCH dialogue,
  • Start entering the word or phrase you need to find in the search bar,
  • Choose the word you need in the sorted list.

How do I change the order in which translations are presented from different dictionaries?

The order in which translations are presented from different dictionaries is determined by the order of dictionaries in the corresponding translation direction.

To change the order of dictionaries:

  • Select DICTIONARIES button in the menu
  • Select translation direction using language filter
  • Choose dictionary for changing the order
  • Move the dictionary up/down the list in the panel that opens with the help of these buttons /media/4463/down_up_v3.png.

How do I switch off a dictionary, so that translations from it will not be shown in the entry?

To disconnect a dictionary:

  • Select DICTIONARIES button in the menu
  • Select translation direction using language filter
  • Choose dictionary for disconnection
  • Select DEACTIVATE button in the menu

How do I browse the translation history?

To browse the list of words translated earlier, press the HISTORY button in the Search window or entry in the menu.

How do I hide examples and comments in dictionary entries?

To hide examples and comments, press BRIEF VIEW in the entry menu.

How do I browse inflected forms?

To browse inflected forms, press the INFLECTED FORMS button in the entry menu.

Which translation is shown in the minicard?

The minicard shows brief translation. This is the first meaning from the top-priority dictionary in the respective translation direction.

How to translate?

In a Live translation mode aim the pointer /media/4462/lingvotrans1.png at a word you need (a text string with this word should match with the dashed line on the screen). Wait a second while camera is focusing (or use manual focus by tapping /media/4460/lingvotrans2.png) and tap anywhere on the screen or on this button /media/4461/lingvotrans3.png.

How can I see the detailed translation?

To view the detailed translation, press the brief-translation area in the minicard.

What translation directions does Live translation support?

Photo input supports all translation directions available in the application, except translation directions where the source language is Kazakh or Chinese.

Why does the application fail to find the translation of any word in the text?

The reasons for that can be as follows:
1) Incorrectly set source language – you must reverse the translation direction.
2) Poor quality of the original photo – you must re-photograph the text. Provide good lighting for your paper text, hold your cell phone steadily and don’t move it until the photo is taken.

2) Poor quality of the original photo – you must re-photograph the text. Provide good lighting for your paper text, hold your cell phone steadily and don’t move it until the photo is taken.
3) Incorrectly determined top and bottom portions of the text – make sure that in the viewing window the camera icon on the photo button is oriented horizontally.

Settings

What settings are available in the application?

The following settings can be adjusted in the application:

  1. Font size in the word list and card;
  2. Indicate stress - highlighting stressed vowels in an entry: switch on/off,
  3. Show suggestions - anticipation of entered words: switch on/off.

Where can application settings be changed? 

All settings are available in the Search window menu.
