ABBYY, a leading provider of document recognition, data capture and linguistic software, today announced its FineReader Express Edition for Mac, a new optical character recognition (OCR) application for Macintosh computers. The application accurately turns scanned paper documents, PDF files and camera images into popular electronic formats such as RTF documents, XLS spreadsheets, searchable PDFs, and HTML files. ABBYY FineReader Express Edition for Mac delivers superior accuracy of text recognition in 171 languages and intelligently re-creates layout and formatting elements of the original document including tables, columns, graphics, bullets and numbering. It fluently processes various document types including pages of magazines and books, spreadsheets, business documents and more, delivering accurate results even on the types of images that are typically difficult to OCR, such as faxes or digital photographs. To ensure the highest levels of OCR accuracy, ABBYY FineReader Express Edition for Mac automatically deskews and despeckles images before recognition.
By leveraging its powerful digital camera OCR technology, users can extract printed text from digital photographs with the application, and use their cameras as alternative scanning devices. For example, users can easily convert pictures of banners, posters, or timetables taken on-the-go, as well as photographed pages of books and other documents which are hard to scan in the usual way.
ABBYY FineReader Express Edition for Mac also supports conversion of various types of PDF including image-only, or scanned, PDF that can be transformed into searchable PDF format ideal for archiving purposes.
For user convenience, the most popular conversion routines (e.g. conversion to text, spreadsheet, or searchable PDF) are grouped into the QuickTasks menu enabling users to perform the entire process and get the resulting file with just one click of a button. In addition, FineReader Express Edition for Mac supports conversion of several documents at a time which will be merged and saved as a single file in the required format. This feature saves user’s time when converting pages of a book or other multipage document or when combining several PDF files.
