ABBYY Lingvo Dictionaries for Android: Translate More with Your Camera

ABBYY®, a leading provider of document recognition, data capture and linguistic technologies, today announced ABBYY Lingvo Dictionaries 4.0 for Android dictionary software with new photo and live-translation features.

Live-translation (i.e. translating with device’s camera video mode) is used to understand words and snippets of printed text: a person aims the pointer at an unfamiliar term and taps on the screen to see its meaning. Photo translation encourages enjoyable reading of longer texts: it supports taking full-page photos and makes all of the words tappable for translation.

A single tap on a word summons a brief entry with the most common translation alternative. Another tap turns this entry into a full one, containing several translation variants, transcription, usage examples and inflected forms. Using Lingvo Dictionaries, Android customers can easily assemble a personal digital library for any of 28 languages by choosing from free pocket dictionaries and comprehensive paid dictionaries.

The updated version for Android provides mobile software developers with a new functionality of ABBYY’s dictionary API – Lingvo API, a useful tool for integrating Lingvo Dictionaries features into other Android-based applications. Transferring the word search history from ABBYY’s dictionary software into any other program is also possible now, along with one-tap translation and advanced dictionary support. For this, the Lingvo Dictionaries application, its databases and developer’s own software should all be installed on the same device.
