ABBYY FineReader® Recognition Technology Integrated with Popular Fujitsu ScanSnap Document Scanner Addressing Small/Medium Business Document Scanning Needs

ABBYY today announced that Fujitsu Computer Products of America, Inc. (FCPA) will use ABBYY FineReader® recognition technology to extend the functionality of its popular ScanSnap document scanner.

ABBYY developed FineReader® for ScanSnap, a custom application designed specifically for the Fujitsu ScanSnap S500 document scanner. This special edition of FineReader is seamlessly integrated with ScanSnap Manager, a Fujitsu proprietary software that offers users a simple tool to customize their scanning preferences while leveraging the Fujitsu one-button scanning capability to scan directly to Microsoft Word, Excel, and PowerPoint. In addition, Fujitsu also uses ABBYY FineReader Engine SDK in conjunction with Adobe PDF library to create its custom Scan-to-PDF application for ScanSnap.

“The collaboration between the two companies allows Fujitsu to maintain the ease-of-use our ScanSnap scanner line has come to be known for while vastly extending its one-button functionality to incorporate some of the most widely used applications in the business sector,” said Scott Francis, director of product marketing, Imaging Products Group, Fujitsu Computer Products of America, Inc.

“InfoTrends' 2005 Forecast projects that the market for document imaging scanners will have an impressive 40 percent compound annual growth rate through 2009,” said Jonathan Franke, Senior Research Analyst, Dynamic Content Software Strategies, InfoTrends. “As document scanning becomes a bigger part of the mainstream corporate environment and workers rely on scanned images of paper documents to do their jobs, we expect technologies such as OCR to grow in importance.”

“Our aim as the primary recognition technology provider for hardware vendors is to help them achieve their goals in the marketplace,” said Dean Tang, president and chief executive officer of ABBYY USA. “In this case, our collaboration with Fujitsu meant designing FineReader for ScanSnap to help make this scanner a simple, easy, productive device for office workers to convert paper into both searchable PDF files and into the most commonly-used office applications.”
