Handwriting recognition is the automated interpretation of handwritten text in documents, converting manually written content into machine-readable form. It is technically distinct from optical character recognition (OCR), which processes printed text. Handwriting recognition uses:

  • Intelligent character recognition (ICR)
  • Machine learning models trained on diverse handwriting styles
  • Algorithms designed to interpret the variability inherent in human handwriting, including variations in letter shape, size, slant, and spacing that printed character recognition is not designed to handle
