Advanced Chips Integrate OCR Capabilities into Cellular Phones, PDA’s, Digital Cameras and Other Mobile Devices
ABBYY, a world leader in the development of document recognition, data capture and linguistic technologies, today announced that Digital Sun Optoelectronics, an ASIC design house based in Taiwan, selected the ABBYY Mobile OCR SDK to introduce highly accurate mobile data capture capabilities into its Application-Specific Integrated Circuit (ASIC) chips that are designed to be embedded in cell phones, PDA cell phones, digital cameras and other mobile devices.
“We are thrilled to see ABBYY’s award-winning OCR technology being integrated at the chip level to add value to these products without substantially adding to cost or power consumption,” said Dean Tang, president and chief executive officer of ABBYY USA. “Digital Sun’s multi-function ASIC chips are poised to answer the demands of device manufacturers and provide opportunities to leverage OCR technology in innovative new ways.”
Using the ABBYY OCR SDK, Digital Sun created applications that allow a PDA phone or smartphone to capture contact information from business cards, or capture text from portions of a document. Users simply take a photograph of a business card and the software intelligently extracts contact information and puts it into the address book. In addition, users can capture text and send it out using SMS, or e-mail, and they can use the built-in electronic dictionaries to automatically translate the information, such as a captured menu entry, into another language.
The software also automatically enhances photo resolution to allow a 1.3 or 2 megapixel camera to create VGA-quality images. Digital Sun has integrated these capabilities into its first-to-market integrated circuits that allow mobile device manufacturers in the Asia Pacific market to add mobile scanning capabilities to their products quickly and easily. The chips feature strong enhancement of pre-image processing in order to increase conversion accuracy even in complex image environments.
“ABBYY’s OCR expertise, extensive language support and its unmatched OCR speed and accuracy, complement our image processing expertise for a truly winning combination,” said Jeff Lin, general manager of Digital Sun Optoelectronics.
Digital Sun will introduce its new ASIC’s to OEM buyers and mobile device carriers in July 2007. For additional information about the ABBYY Mobile OCR SDK, please visit https://www.abbyy.com/.
