ABBYY announces advanced character recognition and support for East Asian languages in Mobile OCR SDK 2.5.

Additional Image Correction Capabilities and Language Support Extend Opportunities for Mobile Device Developers to Add Value through Custom Applications

ABBYY, a leading provider of document recognition, data capture and linguistic technologies, today announced its Mobile OCR SDK 2.5 with intelligent image correction capabilities and support for East Asian languages including Chinese, Japanese, and Korean (CJK).

ABBYY Mobile OCR SDK supports developers in integrating optical character recognition (OCR) and business card reading functions into mobile platforms and applications. The SDK offers a truly OS-independent technology to support integration into any mobile platform including the Brew, Linux, Symbian, and Windows Mobile operating systems.

Mobile OCR SDK 2.5 includes automatic correction of distorted images to produce cleaner and more consistent reproductions of images. The CJK support enables hardware manufacturers, application developers and service providers to incorporate OCR solutions that integrate East Asian languages and extend the international reach of mobile applications.

The updates in Mobile OCR SDK 2.5 enable East Asian character recognition for integration into developer’s mobile platforms and applications. In addition to the increased functionality of character recognition, this version also intelligently corrects image distortions with skew correction of up to 20 percent, rotation of images 90, 180, or 270 degrees, and fisheye and trapezium adjustments.

Designed with the needs of mobile solution providers in mind, the ABBYY Mobile OCR SDK combines powerful recognition functions with a small software footprint to minimize the use of hardware resources, and provide accurate real-time results.  Developers can readily embed OCR functionality into any mobile imaging device, including camera phones, digital cameras, PDAs, GPSs, handheld scanners, and other camera-based hardware.

“Analyst firm IDC found that the Asia/Pacific (excluding Japan) telecom services market was worth over $215 billion in 2007 and expects mobile phone sales in the Asia Pacific region to grow by an annual rate of 10 percent in 2008,” said Dean Tang, president and CEO at ABBYY USA. “This is a significant growth opportunity for hardware manufacturers, developers and service providers to produce customized solutions for users of mobile devices. Through the updates to our Mobile OCR SDK, our customers are able to create valuable, customized applications targeted at this rapidly growing market.”
