ABBYY Lingvo x5 Expands the Horizons of Dictionary Software Use

New Version Combines Premium Multilingual Content with Intelligent Word Look-Up and Online Access to Translation Memory and Other Language Services


ABBYY, a leading provider of document recognition, document capture, and linguistic technologies and services, today announced ABBYY Lingvo x5, a new evolution of its comprehensive dictionary software. ABBYY Lingvo x5 offers highly accurate translations of words and phrases between Russian and up to 19 languages, providing premium dictionary content and direct access to millions of common word-use examples collected in Translation Memory. Individual users of ABBYY Lingvo x5 also have one-year online access to all dictionaries they have purchased. In addition, enhanced with ABBYY’s award-winning Optical Character Recognition (OCR) technology, Lingvo x5 now provides instant translations of words from within any application.


With the ABBYY Lingvo x5 software, customers have access to 220 extensive dictionaries from authoritative publishers such as Oxford University Press, HarperCollins® Publishers, ABBYY® Press, Russky Yazyk Media® and Russo®, offering accurate translation of hundreds of thousands of headwords and phrases. The dictionary entries contain detailed information on keywords including translation alternatives, example sentences, grammatical descriptions, inflected forms, and audio pronunciations recorded by native speakers.


The new version includes completely revised and updated editions of the Oxford Dictionary of English and the New Oxford American Dictionary with more than 1,000 illustrations. In addition, Lingvo x5 contains a vast collection of samples for official correspondence in English, German, French and Spanish. From these samples, customers can learn how to compose congratulations, personal and public letters, invitations, various applications, and CVs. Direct Access to Millions of Word-Use Examples

Users of the new Lingvo have direct access to Translation Memory at ABBYY Lingvo.Pro, an online portal that offers various language services from ABBYY. The Translation Memory contains over 15 million examples for common usage of words and phrases selected from books, Web sites, technical publications, and legal documents in English, German, French, and Russian. This service allows users to find out if a certain combination of words is really used in the language and which words usually accompany each other in the text, therefore providing a unique material for both language translation and learning.


Custom Dictionaries for Effective Work and Study

ABBYY Lingvo x5 enables customers to create their own glossaries and subject dictionaries for preserving the integrity of terminology when translating corporate documents, or custom learner’s dictionaries for better memorization of words and set expressions. Custom dictionaries can be added easily to the existing dictionary collection and become available for users across the corporate network. In addition, customers can enhance their custom dictionaries with pictures of the described objects, processes or phenomena to provide more information on a specific term and make translation and learning processes easier.


Online Access to Purchased Dictionaries

ABBYY Lingvo x5 customers will also benefit from online access to their software by using any device with a Web browser. All dictionaries purchased by a customer will be stored on a server which customers can access through their own account. Once the Lingvo license is activated, this service is accessible within a year without extra charge.

Lingvo’s powerful word look-up capabilities have been enhanced with the intelligent OCR technology internationally known for its outstanding accuracy and multilingual support. OCR technology recognizes printed characters and words on the screen and automatically looks them up in Lingvo dictionaries. Now Lingvo users can get instant translation of words from within any application or file including PDFs, images, photographs and even movie subtitles, by simply pointing the mouse cursor on them. This is a very convenient capability when working with several applications simultaneously, and it saves time spent on manual typing.

In addition to a standalone license, ABBYY Lingvo x5 is available for volume license purchase for corporate customers, based on the number of users working with the product simultaneously or the total number of computers with the software installed.
